Lives Per Gallon Story Project The HUMAN Cost of our Oil Addiction Helping Victims of the BP Oil Spill Helping America Take Action to Solve the Oil Crisis
United Houma Nation Vice Principal Chief, Lora Ann Chaisson explained that for her community the ripple effect of the oil spill is devastating. All of their community members from the grocery store owner to the basketweaver are experiencing the threat to both their sacred way of life and their sacred lands. She expressed that right now their future is uncertain. We met Lora Ann with two other members of the United Houma Nation at a meeting hosted by the Department of Commerce in East New Orleans. The meeting was held to hear directly from minority fisherman groups about how the oil spill is impacting their community and livelihood.

We asked Lora Ann how the oil spill had impacted her and her community; what it means to her as a member of a tribal nation spiritually and for the ecosystem in their community; and what does she want people to know about how people can help her community directly.
