Lives Per Gallon Story Project The HUMAN Cost of our Oil Addiction Helping Victims of the BP Oil Spill Helping America Take Action to Solve the Oil Crisis
Janice Washington, Mother/Grandmother/Volunteer Cook for the Community Center of St. Bernard
Violet, Louisiana
Janice was a vibrant, charismatic woman who explained that the poor people in the region need help and don't want to be forgotten victims of the oil spill. She suggested that one of the best ways to help was to give to a local church which are most often the trusted center of the community. Janice herself has been impacted by the spill - on a fixed income she often relies on fishing the local waters to make meals for her family. Now she can no longer do so. We met Janice at the Community Center of St. Bernard where she is a volunteer cook. Janice was hesitant to talk to us at first but broke down after some coaxing (and after other volunteers suggested she was the person to talk to).
